New life for a charming 1885 villa

In 2020, Andrea Holthusen bought her dream home on the island of Als i Denmark. The villa was in need of a loving renovation, partly because moisture and rain had penetrated the old brickwork, leaving both the insulation and the walls damp. This created ideal conditions for mold growth and resulted in a cold, humid indoor climate that made it difficult to feel comfortable in the house.

One of Andrea’s first steps was to contact master mason Michael Duus from Hørup Murerforretning, who recommended installing SkamoWall – a solution that has brought noticeable improvements.

Dream home with a cold and damp indoor climate

In 2020, Andrea Holthusen bought her dream home on the island of Als, Denmark. A house from 1885 that, while in need of a loving renovation, had the potential to fulfill all her dreams.
One of the first things she focused on was the indoor climate. The air was cold and damp, and it was difficult to keep the house warm.

"It felt like wearing a cold, wet T-shirt and then trying to get warm by putting on a jacket. We therefore contacted master mason Michael Duus from Hørup Murerforretning, who confirmed that there was moisture and mold in the house and recommended renovating with SkamoWall," Andrea explains and continues:

"SkamoWall was the obvious choice, as we also wanted to preserve the house’s architecture, which is such an essential part of its charm. With SkamoWall, we were able to insulate the house from the inside, preserving its character while at the same time addressing the moisture and mold problems."

A Long-Lasting Solution

The source of the moisture was the villa’s worn exterior brickwork, which allowed damp and rain to penetrate, leaving both the insulation and the walls wet. That is why Michael Duus recommended SkamoWall.

"There’s nothing easier than trapping moisture inside. A new stud wall would only seal the moisture in again and create ideal conditions for mold. SkamoWall, on the other hand, manages the moisture. The panels allow it to move within them — absorbing and retaining it, then releasing it again as soon as the room is ventilated. Those properties are hard to find in similar materials," explains Michael.

Simple installation

During the renovation, Andrea moved from room to room as the work progressed. That’s why choosing a solution that was quick to install was crucial — a need perfectly met by SkamoWall, explains Michael Duus.

"SkamoWall is easy to work with and something we can install relatively quickly. At Andrea’s house, we had just one person installing SkamoWall across the entire upper floor. We’ve used it with great success in similar projects, and my customers are always very happy and satisfied with the solution, which also gives them a healthier indoor climate. I’ve even installed it myself in one of my own rental properties."

Noticeable improvements and savings

Today, Andrea is very happy with the SkamoWall solution. Not only has she gained a significantly better indoor climate, but she has also more room in her budget.

"I feel like I can breathe much better in the house now, and it holds the warmth far more effectively. With the renovation, I’ve even managed to save 40% on our heating bill," Andrea says with a smile, adding:

”I truly think it’s a wonderful product — especially for older houses like ours. It feels like we’ve done something good for the indoor climate, for ourselves, for the house, and for the environment as a whole,” afslutter Andrea.
