Aesthetic Preservation and Modern Comfort

Fredericia’s old train station from 1850 – an impressive 2,655 m² property – has in recent years undergone not just one but two complete renovations. The first took place when the station was converted into 26 apartments, and the second followed a devastating fire during the renovation process.

With its heritage status, a careful approach was required to preserve the building’s historical character both before and after the fire – and here, SkamoWall played a key role.

Respectful Renovation

In Fredericia, Denmark, stands this beautiful old train station – an impressive building from 1850 featuring exquisite architectural craftsmanship on the facade and original, unique interior details. It’s no surprise that the building is heritage-protected, which placed significant demands on the property company Bo-To when they took over the station to renovate and convert it into 26 new apartments

”We were able to renovate the building without altering the facade – a crucial factor for a listed building like this.

Effective Moisture Management

Decades of exposure to wind and weather – combined with missing gutters and drainage – had taken their toll on the old train station. The exterior walls were damp, resulting in dark patches of mould inside.

”A complete renovation was required to preserve the building and ensure a healthy indoor climate for future residents," says Torben Bjerg, Site Manager at Bo-To.

"When we heard about SkamoWall, we quickly realized it was the ideal solution to the building’s moisture and mould issues. SkamoWall is installed on the inside, which meant we could renovate the building without altering the facade – a crucial factor for a listed building like this," Torben explains.

SkamoWall regulates moisture by naturally absorbing and releasing it, preventing mould growth. "It has been a very effective solution. You can almost see that the building is ‘breathing’ better now, and we can feel that the indoor climate has improved significantly. The mould that previously damaged the walls and the indoor environment is gone," says Torben.

Impressive Protection

But it wasn’t just the moisture and mould control that impressed Torben. During the renovation, a large and devastating fire broke out in the old train station.

"It was truly surprising to see how SkamoWall’s fire-resistant properties likely saved part of the building during the fire," Torben says. "So, we had no doubt that it should also be used in the reconstruction of the station after the fire."

Easy Installation

For the craftsmen, the choice of SkamoWall was also very well received. "It’s easy to cut and quick to install. A great product to work with. This won’t be the last time we use SkamoWall for similar projects," says Torben.

The renovation of Fredericia Station has successfully combined modern building materials with respect for the original architecture. And when the station finally stands completed, many will be able to enjoy a building that has been given new life – without losing its historical soul.
